Just picked up a lovely Rolex Explorer II 16570 in black, a W series dating back to 1995 last serviced in 2011 - and quite lovely is it too. The Rolex 16570 is the third generation of the Explorer II line and was produced for well over two decades. Read on as we cover the history and evolution of the 16570, as well as review the design and value of this tough Rolex tool watch. In total, Rolex built four generations of the 16570. It started with a series built between 1989 and 1997. It came with a 100m-water-resistant 40mm Oyster case — a millimeter larger than the 1655 — with a 47mm lug-to-lug length and a 12.2mm thickness. The Explorer II in 16570 form is undoubtedly true to its tool watch roots with an extremely easy-to-read dial as well as durable and robust construction. It wears light and airy on the wrist, slipping easily under my shirt cuff. I own a few six-digit Rolex watches and the difference in feel is quite noticeable.
The watch is equipped with a plexiglass crystal, the water-resistance of vintage watches is harder to guarantee, the bracelet can be fragile and tends to have some stretch, and you’ll be wearing a watch that will cost a small fortune (at least 24-26k euros for a nice watch).
