The grand seiko white birch, Omega speedmaster and the new Tudor BlackBay pro are still way higher on my list. If I ever manage to get these, I might consider a Panerai. But not a 70k Panerai. Don't get me wrong, I love watches but completing that list is not a priority to me.
Panerai has a really strong, unique, and frankly popular design language, they really have noone challenging them in their niche, but they're flooding their own market and all their pieces end up competing with each other for being so similar, but having myriad slight differences. This article seems pretty honest and comprehensive about Panerai's movement origins. It looks like ValFleurier designs movements and produces movement kits/ebauches, which are delivered to Panerai and assembled. Sort of like Shinola, actually.
But, in the recent years, Panerai started to go down in general popularity, mainly because of the quality control issues which are not up to the standards you would expect at this price point.
